Photography Inauguration - Latin hairdressers: looking for the perfect haircut
Thu 11 Oct / 18:00
Pabellón de las Artes, Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina / Av. Alicia M. de Justo 1300
Marc van der Aa is a photographer with a creative mind. He likes to work in series, for example taking lots of pictures at parties and concerts but also tackles more introspective subjects like reflections in sunglasses and hairdressers. The best of the latter series, presented under the title ‘Latin hairdressers: looking for the perfect haircut’ will be shown from the 11th of October onwards in the Art Pavilion of the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina (Argentine Catholic University). The photographs were made in 2006 and 2007, but this project is a work in progress by nature. The why and how of ‘Latin hairdressers’ is simple to explain: Marc van der Aa loves to travel and has the habit of getting a haircut in every country he visits. One day it occurred to him to start portraying hairdressers: “I was looking for something that can be found everywhere but is at the same time different in every country. Of course, I could have chosen policemen or people working in supermarkets, but as they are not self employed, taking pictures would have been a lot more complicated.” The photographs for this exhibition were made in various Latin-American countries, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. As a rule, Marc van der Aa takes at the most four hairdressers pictures in every city. He doesn’t show them at work; the hairdressers sit in their own chair, posing frontally. As Van der Aa says, it must be one of the oldest professions on earth (in days of yore sharp stones and knifes and hot iron were used to cut hair). These days, they seem to be more important than ever: from providing a simple haircut to being responsible for creating an image (from barber to stylist). There is a whole world out there of hair products, contests, new developments and celebrities setting trends. Moreover, there are lots of expressions referring to hair: ‘Having a bad hair day’, ‘Keep your hair on!’, ‘Let one’s hair down’, ‘Blonds have more fun’, etcetera. Also, the religious and symbolic value of hair throughout the ages shouldn’t be underestimated, from Samson to haircuts indicating social standing, beliefs and convictions. The photographs by Marc van der Aa prove that every hairdresser interprets his or her work in a different way. The same implements are used everywhere - chair, mirror and scissors - but the trappings, and thus the prices, vary greatly. Indeed, some offer just a very basic haircut whereas others clearly consider themselves a cut above the rest. Cecilia Cavanagh, director of the Art Pavilion of the Catholic University Argentina enabled this exhibition. Meanwhile, the Royal Dutch Embassy in Buenos Aires kindly took this initiative under its wings.

Pura Cepa (something very pure) combines elements of dance, music and theater, weaving through styles, aesthetics and textures with various scenes. The play is created by Ana Frenkel who also formed part of an amazing erotic dance and theater troupe called El Descueve. Thus hands down it makes it in our recommendations for tonight and the rest of the month. Thursdays & Saturdays at 9:30pm

Pequeña Orquesta Reincidentes is a graceful 5-man outfit dressed to the “9-to-5”´s and playing “musical instrument chairs” on stage. They tear out your heart with anxiously-sweet melodies and the guy next to you (wine-stain on his lapel) knows all the words.
