Onda Vaga
Onda Vaga
Onda Vaga began in January 2007, in the magical beaches of Cabo Polonio, Uruguay; when Nacho Rodríguez and Marcelo Blanco (former Doris www.myspace.com/dorisrock) along with Marcos Orellana and Tomás Justo (Michael Mike www.myspace.com/michaelmikerock) prepared an acoustic set (acoustic guitar, cuatro, trumpet, cajon) with their own songs to play some gigs during their vacation. In May 2007, back in Argentina, a new member joined the group: Germán Cohen (Satélite Kingston www.myspace.com/elsatelitekingston, Orquesta de salón www.myspace.com/salonerias), adding his voice and the smooth color of his trombone to the band.

The debut in Buenos Aires came in August 2007, in Tosto. Since then, strengthened by the final dissolution of Doris (Marcelo and Nacho's 7 year old former band, one of the most influential psychedelic indie rock bands in Argentina) the “vagos” played several times in venues such as Radio Nacional, Chacarerean Theatre, Teatro de la Cooperación, Biblioteca Nacional, etc. They also play in almost any social event they are invited to (parties, openings, birthdays, etc) thanks to the mobility of their instruments and the joyous nature of their presentations. In April and August 2008, they performed a series of sold out gigs at in La Castorera, introducing to the audience what would became Onda Vaga's first album, “Fuerte y Caliente”, released in September '08 along with an opportunity to tour through Chile and Mendoza and also the invitation to play in La Trastienda with Fito Paez, who recorded keyboards and vocals in their album.

2008 ends with a concert in one of Buenos Aires' most prestigious music festivals, sharing the billboard with R.E.M. and Mars Volta among others, and with two gigs per week, one in the city and one in a nearby neighborhood. In December Onda Vaga was named by Rolling Stone magazine as the new band of the year and "Fuerte y Caliente" as one of the 50 most important records of 2008. 2009 began with a tour through Cabo Polonio (the band's birthplace) and a gig in one of Buenos Aires' biggest stages, CC Konex, for more than 1000 people. March comes with good news while Onda Vaga is invited by Manu Chao to open one of his shows in Buenos Aires for more than 7000 people in the classic Luna Park stadium. With deep, existential yet simple lyrics, choral and harmonic arrangements and high-spirited live performances, this mix of rumba-cumbia-reggae-folk-rock-happytango, brings lots of new fans to each show. All five musicians came from Buenos Aires rock culture, but now they've loosened their attachment to wires and distortions, offering themselves to the audience in the way they know the best: having fun.
