Tonolec is a duo whose members -singer Charo Bogarín and musician Diego Pérez- come from the city of Resistencia, province of Chaco. Both Bogarín and Pérez are songwriters who built their music careers by combining electronic with ethnic music the way only they could. These young artists decided to devote the past three years of their lives to the Toba culture; they submerged in it, exchanging musical experiences with Toba communities whose place of origin is Northern Argentina, putting their efforts into mixing Toba folk music with electronic music. Part of their work was based on the singing and dancing sessions of "Chelaalapí" (in Toba language, Flock of Thrushes), a choir involving both Toba men and women who live in Resistencia and who happened to welcome the duet open-armed. The traditional songs Charo and Diego learnt were orally transmitted to them by the seniors of this Toba community; this experience allowed them to collect all kinds of historical materials as well. They also spent some time with a Toba community in Derqui, province of Buenos Aires. That’s where Tonolec saw the light of day, featuring Charo’s powerful, intimate voice and Diego’s refined compositions. Both members of this duet are songwriters whose work includes Spanish-language and Toba-language music with an interesting extra bonus: new versions of traditional songs sang by ethic group Qom (Toba). At a certain point in their lives, they came up with some questions about their own musical identity as songwriters, so they decided to change course. Back then, their number one goal was to create music that could give them a sense of identity, so they went back to their deepest roots and took a better look at the environment they had been raised in. Their experience with Toba communities has been the driving force behind Tonolec’s work. Nowadays, having come a long way, what Tonolec has to offer is a female voice weaving dialogs with Mother Nature and a delicate mixture of acoustic sounds and engineered indigenous choruses. And, most importantly, they offer a combination of all these elements, which translates into different landscapes where you can imagine the lives of the first men to ever inhabit these lands.
